Introduction
A syllabus for an online class needs to include extra information. In
this assignment, you will clarify those differences and prepare a first
draft of a syllabus. The Ko textbook chapter
on Creating an Effective Online Syllabus offers
some useful advice on what to include. Here are some ideas:
- How the online class works
- What students need (computer, Internet, software, skills, time)
- Where students can find resources on campus (library computer
lab, books on reserve, office hours, etc.)
- Information about your Course Management System (CMS)
- How to communicate with you and classmates (including expected turnaround
time for response)
- Expectations about student behavior (cheating, online communication,
etc.)
- Tips for success
- URL for class site and/or CMS (Blackboard/WebCT)
What to Do
- Identify a course syllabus to adapt. If you
don't have a course syllabus, you will need to borrow or create one.
- Review the Cuyamaca College syllabus
guidelines.
- Edit
the syllabus so that it includes information for online students. If
you are unsure of parts, add comments to remind yourself of what will
need to be changed later. You
will submit a revision at the end of the semester, so it is ok to have "placeholders" for
now. If you wish, you can create a separate document about the online
class to distribute with your syllabus (see example).
Submitting work
- Upload and submit your syllabus document(s) to Blackboard (Assignments section).
