Introduction

Most Web sites display a logo at the top of the page. In this assignment, you will use Photoshop to create a web site logo for a fictional company (Karate Studio, Bakery, or Hardware Store). Organize your work in layers.

What to Do

PART 1:  RESEARCH (may be completed in teams or alone)

  1. Take a look at some examples of logos created by students and spend about an hour reviewing my logo resources
  2. CHOOSE ONE of the following options and post your analysis in the Moodle Discussion entitled "Logo Design." Before you post, read through the other postings and make sure your posting is unique. For example, don't summarize an article someone else has summarized or post examples that have already been posted.
    1. Identify a few effective and ineffective logos and consider what makes a web logo effective. Include images of the logos you discuss and your overall analysis/summary (at least one paragraph).
    2. Browse 10 web sites and analyze the logos. Include images of the logos and links to the sites. Where does the logo show up on the home page and sub pages? What trends do you notice? What is the purpose of a web site logo?
    3. Read and summarize one of the sites that discusses logo design tips. You can use one I link to or find one of your own. Include a link to the site.

PART 2:  DESIGN

  1. Make up an imaginary client.  Write a brief paragraph describing the client, the audience for the Web site, and the goals of the logo -- save this in a document entitled logodesign.doc (or .rtf or .txt).
  2. Sketch some ideas on paper.  Logos should be simple, clear, and able to scale without distortion.

PART 3:  DEVELOPMENT

  1. Launch Photoshop or Fireworks and create your logo using layers & vector graphics.  Name your file logo.psd or logo.png. You may use text, but your logo must scale well so avoid bitmap graphics (photos & bitmap clip art).  If you wish, you may create your logo in Illustrator and import it.
