CIS 213 Notes:  What's Different About Dreamweaver MX?

Dreamweaver MX

You can select What's New from the Help menu in Dreamweaver to get a tour.  Here are the main differences between versions:

  • Improved interface - tabbed document windows, dockable panel groups, integrated file browsing.  A new Insert menu at the top of the window replaces the Objects menu that floated on the left.
  • Database integration tools included -  you used to have to pay more for Dreamweaer UltraDev to get these tools
  • Database integration tools support more technologies - now you can build ColdFusion MX, ASP.NET, and PHP websites
  • Cascading Style Sheets support has been improved - interface is much more intuitive
  • New coding and accessibility features - includes code validation, snippets (bits of code can be stored for use in any site)
  • Prebuilt content and templates

Dreamweaver MX 2004

See Top 10 Differences from Macromedia for details.

Since I show demonstrations in different versions of Dreamweaver, be sure you understand these interface differences:

Property Inspector & Applying CSS

In MX 2004, the link box is on the right (where image box used to be).  This makes it easier to point to files to make links.  Also, you apply styles in the style pulldown.

Insert Bar

In MX 2004, the Insert Bar appears with choices in a pull-down menu by default.  MX had tabs, and you can change to a tab view if you prefer it.

Copy & Paste

In MX 2004, if you copy and paste from a web page, the CODE will be pasted.  Choose Edit -> Paste Text to paste text only.
